named after the 48th state. She was commissioned in 1916 and saw some action in World War I.
World War II
She is best known for her sinking at Pearl Harbor in which 1,177 lives were lost, on December 7, 1941. This Japanese attack brought the United States into World War II. The wreck was not completely salvaged, but her turrets and guns (except for turret #1, which was discovered in 1983)were removed and used as coast defenses for Oahu. There is a memorial, of the same name, there honoring her crew that died that day.
