The Greco-Persian Wars were a group of wars fought between the city states of ancient Greece, led by Athens and Sparta, and the ancient Achaemenid Persian Empire started in 499 BC by the Persian Shah (or "King of Kings") Darius I and continued by his son and successor, Xerxes I. The wars were ended in 448 BC under the reign of Artaxerxes I, Xerxes I's son and successor. One of the most famous battles was the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC.
